AT in a Day October 2009
The Dartmouth Outing Club's 100th anniversary is this year, and some current students thought that we should celebrate the milestone in spectacular fashion. They suggested that DOC and other Dartmouth alums hike the entirety of the Appalachian Trail in one 24-hour period. And the current students and alums got behind the idea in force. Commitments to hike portions of the Trail poured in, and on October 10, all along the 2,175 mile AT, current Dartmouth students and alums of all ages struck out to cover their portion of the Trail. It was phenomenal to know that over 1,000 students and alumni were hitting the AT all at the same time and with a common goal. Our 41-mile section was organized by Wayne Bardsley '70, who broke it up into ~10 mile segments. I was on segment 4, which ran from the Pennsylvania border back into Maryland just south of the Cowall Shelter to Wolfsville Road. It included: the highest Trail elevation in Maryland; some wicked steep climbs and drops (an elevation gain of 600 feet in under a mile and an elevation drop of 600 feet in under a mile); rocky ground; gorgeous views; 10.2 miles in 6 hours (ok, some of them made it in 4); and an eclectic and fun group of hikers! AT in a Day!
